Fast and Fun! Check out my lastest Video…

July 14th, 2010

Boy this got fast in a hurry - please check out the first video on my “Videos I’m In” page.  Another fun time slapping the ol’ upright for Adam Pope.  It’s a fun song about a gal who’s had enough and wants to respect herself, too!  The ending is entertaining, too.  (No I don’t fall off the stage, but I do get “shot” and though it’s off camera I am still playing as I’m falling down.  Big time fun playing for this guy!)

For the words to the song please visit http://www.adampopemusic.com/songlyrics/ilovemetoo.html  Check out the rest of his site.  It features songs from his newest album and words to the songs plus stories by this great storyteller!  The variety of songs in this collection proves to the listener that this young man has a diversity and maturity way beyond his young 25 years of age.

Check out one of Adam’s shows.  Something for everyone, I believe!  Book him for your next party or other event!

The Living Room - an Adam Pope story

December 23rd, 2009

There’s something about capturing raw talent in someone’s own living room.  Growing up listening to music, I also listened and read about folks in Country Music who wanted to capture that beloved feeling of playing to friends in their living room in their recordings.  And it was so with the last song for Adam’s first all-his-own-songs-CD due to be released in mid-January.   This special song, actually written when he was 18 (I just found out!), is a powerfully emotional message song from the point of view of the thief who was on the cross next to Jesus.  And as we were pressed for time, I thought I’d bring my studio equipment down his way and try out his living room for the final vocal and perhaps a fill organ or something else he may have dreamed up along the way.

I was not prepared for what was to happen!  We first added the organ fill mostly because he likes to be able to emote with his voice after the production is set down.  So after several takes experimenting with different ideas, he pretty much nailed a ‘fill’ that does more than most fills I’ve heard these days of autotron type similar sounding licks on everyone’s recordings.  This sound filled me and moved me and after I pressed stop, I jumped up and ran around the corner (I was in the kitchen with my board!) and I could sense he felt the same way about his take.  I couldn’t help but give him a giant congratulatory hug knowing this moment was huge capping off an already impressive collection of songs from this young man.

But that wasn’t all - remember we are in a living room, in a neighborhood, oh and with neighbor dogs :)  How they can bark when you don’t want this at all!  AND of course now it’s quittin’ time for folks so we hear cars roarin’ up the hill, shifting gears and such.  UGH!  What was I thinking!  But when we were planning out the vocals and getting it all set up for him, the dogs and neighborhood became strangely quiet just when we needed it.  Wondrous!  Adam delivered a strong and heartfelt vocal to this song with a message about Jesus “The Wayshower” even on the cross… beautiful, just beautiful.

Later that night we entered the coolest studio we’ve experienced to mix this song and final tweaks on others and then master the project.  This studio was the perfect choice with all it’s Christmas decorations twinkling about, looking every bit as much as a living room itself.  And the engineer Buck rolled well with us and I felt him a part of our musical family, too.

I love recording but it’s extra special when you capture that living room feeling for all-time on a recording with dear friends.  Thanks Adam for letting me be a part of all the great moments and experiences and lessons learned on this project!

My new DPA 4099 microphone is amazing!

October 24th, 2009

WOW!  I just tried this out in England the other day.  Oh was it sweet!  Found the rented bass’s sweet spot, put the mic on it’s holder and played.  I really enjoyed it.  Lightweight microphone sound that was as clean and clear as a mic should be.  Very low feedback issues (compared to other mics I’ve used).  Also used my new PowerMute from ProCo and loved that, too.  Had to use the pick-ups on the other 2 basses on the last two gigs but the next gig I hope to have more time to set-up my gear on the rental and try it out again.  The owner of this bass is excited about trying it out as well.  Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!

Please see more technical details in my Gear I Use section.  Thanks!

New pages on my website!

July 26th, 2009

I’ve been updating this site a bit.

Added a separate page for Image Consulting and Band/Tour Management work I do.  I’ve learned quite a bit about the business end of the music industry and if any of that could help you in your musical journey please check that page out.  Also, please check out the expanded Musician Links/etc page as it has some helpful books and organizations for you to consider.

Added a fun page of Lisa-isms, little words I made up for things I find along the way.  If any of you out there remember me saying others, please let me know - I’d love to hear them and put them on here!

Anything anyone else would like to see on this site, please let me know.  Thanks!

Two new videos of Adam Pope, Leroy Deuster and myself

April 1st, 2009

When you get the chance, please check out these two beautiful testaments to Train Engineers and The Good Old Days (when things were made to last) & Family.  They are at the top of my “VIDEOS I’m in” page.

They were recorded by Leroy’s wife Donna at the 8th Annual Dairy State Steel Guitar Show.  What a great event keeping the beauty and power and emotion of that great instrument and its incredible players alive in the upper Midwest and beyond!

Hope you enjoy!

Happy New Year! & Well wishes in Distribution!

January 10th, 2009

I wish each of you visitors a Happy New Year!  For those musicians out there I wish you the best in getting the gigs/deals you want and for the hobby player/singer, best wishes in enjoying your craft, too!

I was just reading an article that spoke of non-musical places we find music in.  So many places are trying using music to bring in new customers or to help advertising “stick” in the heads of potential new customers, and many more ideas especially involving getting your music out there.  (Think Starbucks!)

Music distribution has a whole new meaning now with the internet bringing the world to us in one click!  Check out your favorite artists and see how they are releasing their music to you and others.  Look to putting your music out the same ways and grab those new listeners!

Good luck!

Lisa
